I spent time delving deeper into the cases I found that could signal problems to come should Ohio adopt NIL for high school athletes. A recent violation I read about that might also interest you. The incident involved the athlete making a social media post promoting a clothing brand while wearing his high school uniform. Despite no contract being signed between the athlete and company, no money changing hands, no parental involvement or knowledge, and the post being removed within 48 hours, the student was still punished and found ineligible for the year. This incident is one, I assume of many, that highlights the need for more education given the changing landscape of NIL. Here is a link to the Board Meeting minutes which outline the facts of the violation: https://aiaonline.org/files/18277/executive-board-meeting-agenda-march-18-2024.pdf
Shady Side Academy basketball coach initially suspended for one year by Pennsylvania high school athletic association for recruiting violation. She messaged the parents of a player from another school who followed her on twitter. She offered to provide information about her basketball program. However, she appealed and the court ultimately overturned the suspension finding that the act of following the coach on Twitter amounted to a showing interest in the school, thus allowing the coach to “respond” to such interest with information.
