After my meeting with the AD of St. Edwards High school, I wanted to delve deeper into high school recruiting infractions to see what were some recent violations and what was the punishment imposed.
Warren John F. Kennedy High School violated recruiting rules when a student athlete on the football team, at the direction of a member of the football coaching staff, contacted a prospective student athlete that had not submitted an application for enrollment at Warren JFK. The contact was made in an attempt to influence the prospective student athlete for purposes of securing their enrollment at Warren JFK for athletic purposes. The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) accepted Warren JFK’s self imposed corrective action plan, which included 1.) a suspension of the coach; 2.) an educational seminar regarding the recruiting bylaw for the coaching staff of the football team, and 3.) an educational seminar regarding the recruiting bylaw for all student athletes. The school was further fined $500 and publicly reprimanded.
StowMunroe Falls High School violated recruiting/marketing rules when a camp brochure was sent directly to individuals outside of the StowMunroe Falls City School District for distribution to the students of those respective districts. This distribution was completed by a member of the StowMunroe Falls youth hockey program without first consulting with the StowMunroe Falls High School ice hockey program or administration. OHSAA accepted StowMunroe Falls High School’s self imposed corrective action plan and the school was publicly reprimanded.
There were a couple things I took away from my research into recent infractions. 1. self-imposed corrections are generally accepted. 2. Even more blatant forms of recruiting violations are not as harshly punished as I would expect.
