I volunteered for an event co-hosted by WISE and the USA Basketball Association in connection with the Women’s Final Four.  I helped with the setup, check in, and a raffle. It is always such a learning experience and a challenge helping with events. It’s definitely not in my wheelhouse, but I gain valuable skills every time. Particularly skills in quick problem solving and service. I also met so many new people involved in the sports industry from across the country. One particular woman I spoke with works in student athlete development.

Student athlete development involves nurturing and supporting student athletes to excel not only in their sport but also in academics, personal growth, and life skills. It made me think about the benefits of student athlete development.  Student athletes must learn to manage their time effectively to excel both in their academics and their sport. This often involves developing strong organizational skills, time management, and seeking support from academic advisors and tutors.  This individual spoke about the purpose of developing skills that will benefit them beyond their athletic careers, such as communication, teamwork, leadership, goal setting, and problem-solving.  Student athletes should be prepared for life after sports through career planning, networking opportunities, and assistance in transitioning to a new phase of their lives once their athletic careers come to an end.  Student athlete development focuses on holistic growth, including self-awareness, self-confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose beyond sports.  By addressing these aspects of student athlete development, universities, coaches, and support staff aim to foster the overall well-being and success of student athletes both during their academic and athletic careers and beyond.
